A 5 litre countertop compost bin in coated steel, built to sit out rather than hide under the sink. The lid takes an activated charcoal filter that holds the smell in, and the handle is sized for an adult grip so you can carry a full bin to the garden without decanting. Three filters in the box, roughly a year of use.
What it's made of
Granrosi by Gütewerk. Coated steel inside and out, in a farmhouse silhouette with a domed vented lid and a swing handle. The coating is the part that matters: bare metal in constant contact with wet peelings rusts, and a bin that rusts stains the counter it stands on. At 1.2 kg it is solid enough not to tip when the handle is pulled.
How the odour control works
The vented lid lets gases escape upward through an activated charcoal filter rather than trapping them to build pressure. A sealed bin with no venting turns into a fermenting jar and smells worse each time you open it. Each filter runs three to four months, and there are three in the box, so the set covers nine to twelve months before you buy more.
How it's used
Keep it beside the chopping board rather than under the sink, because a bin you have to bend down to open is a bin you stop using. Peelings, cores, coffee grounds and tea leaves go in. Empty it into the garden composter or the municipal food waste collection every few days: 5 litres is two or three days of scraps for a household of four.
Care
Wipe the body with hot water and washing-up liquid, then dry it. The filter stays dry, so lift the lid off before rinsing. Do not put it in the dishwasher. If you line it, use a compostable liner rather than plastic, since plastic defeats the point and will not break down with the contents.
Not suitable for
Liquids and very wet waste that would pool at the bottom. Meat, fish and dairy, which most municipal collections exclude and which will overwhelm a charcoal filter indoors whatever the bin. And the dishwasher.

Frequently asked questions
Does it actually keep the smell in?
Yes, as long as the filter is current. The lid vents upward through activated charcoal, which absorbs the gases rather than trapping them. Replace the filter every three to four months.
How long do the filters last and what then?
Three to four months each. Three come in the box, so nine to twelve months before you need replacements. They are standard round charcoal filters cut to the lid.
Is 5 litres enough?
For a household of four, that is roughly two to three days of peelings, cores and coffee grounds. Larger than a typical caddy, small enough to stay on the counter.
Do I need compostable liners?
No, the coated interior wipes clean. If you prefer a liner, use a compostable one; plastic will not break down with the contents.
Can I put meat and dairy in it?
We would not. Most municipal food waste collections exclude them, and no charcoal filter will hold that smell indoors for long.
Will it rust?
The steel is coated inside and out, which is the part that fails on cheaper bins. Dry it after washing and keep the coating intact.
Can it go in the dishwasher?
No. Wipe it out with hot water and washing-up liquid, then dry. Take the lid off first so the filter stays dry.
